There is nothing like a fun night out watching the Globetrotters with your family to make you want to stay home the next day and veg out with your family under one big blanket on the couch. Now mind you I didn’t. I was a good mom and adulted, but boy I was so tempted to pull out my “I Can Do What I Want Because I’m The Parent” card. The flash flood warnings we were getting didn’t help any. It’s not like we were out too late last night. The place were they play is at the junior college 20 minutes away. It’s weird because it’s such a small place, and you can’t find any information about it on the Globetrotters website. You have to go to the college website to buy tickets. It’s like a secret that only us locals are let in on. It was an absolute blast. I am not even into basketball, and I enjoyed myself. I laughed so hard I cried, and I cheered as loud as any crazed fan could. Right now however I am a zombie with two zombie kids, but it was so worth it.

When a second body turns up, and then a third, the evidence points to the head coach and the other leaders of the football program, who appear to be covering up a secret that would destroy the program. When a man comes forward, claiming to have committed numerous felonies on behalf of the program over many years, the detectives don’t know whether he is the killer or merely a decoy in an elaborate misdirection play. Above the Fray, A Novel of the Union Balloon Corps, Part One
by Kris Jackson
4.1 Stars (14 Reviews)
Genre: Historical Fiction | War

FREE for a limited time

This novel deals with the Union Balloon Corps in the Civil War. At the start of the Civil War, Nathaniel Curry is a fifteen-year-old telegraph operator in Richmond. He travels to Washington to see a balloon demonstration and finds himself, entirely by accident, assisting Thaddeus Lowe in directing artillery fire on a Confederate emplacement – the first use of an aircraft in warfare. A pariah back in Virginia, Nathaniel joins the nascent Union Balloon Corps, the world’s first air force. The Corps, a motley collection of adventurers, science enthusiasts and misfits, struggles to find its place within the Union Army. The aeronauts prove valuable, providing information on enemy positions and movements, but are too unruly to be accepted by the military establishment. Nathaniel, a Southerner, is suspected of being a spy by both sides, even as he has to fight off being recruited as a spy. As the Balloon Corps descends into chaos, even his sweetheart turns against him. Soon his only friend is Abraham Lincoln – and Lincoln wants him to do something that terrifies him. Meticulously researched, this book captures the sweep of the war, and highlights a little-known facet of history that today has come to dominate military thinking. It is the story of the coming of age of aviation, of modern technology, and of the nation itself.
