I just bought my ticket for the next Tough Mudder (ten miles / twenty obstacles), so I guess it’s time to stop eating nachos and cake, and get to working out. I have about four and a half months to undo all the joy I have added to my tushy and get to working on my monkey bar game. I hate the monkey bars. Why on earth kids think they are so much fun is beyond me. Ya, I know kids weigh next to nothing, but still it’s just not a fun thing to do. Neither is running around, and kids like doing that as well. Kids are just weird. In fact, the whole Tough Mudder obstacle course is filled with obstacle kids do for fun, while adults call it a mental and physical challenge. Maybe I will start training after the weekend. For now I will just cry.

By the mid ninth century, Danish raids on Anglo-Saxon kingdoms have escalated. Several bands even dare to overwinter on the coastal islands, particularly those at the mouth of the Thames, where the kingdoms of Wessex and Mercia border each other.
The kings of these lands must put past enmity- aside and take the first steps towards unity; steps they see as vital in the face of this newfound threat to their lands…
Alfred of Wessex and Eadwulf of Mercia are the sons of kings, whose futures have been determined since birth. But the turbulent events in their childhood years change the natural progression of things – and shape the characters of the men they will become.
Their roads to manhood follow vastly different routes, but both learn crucial lessons along the way: lessons that will serve them well in future years.
Discovering that the enemy is not always a stranger is a harsh lesson indeed; the realisation that a trusted kinsman can turn traitor is the harshest lesson of all.
The story takes us from the kingdoms of Mercia and Wessex to the Norse lands stretching north from Denmark to the Arctic Circle and east to the Baltic Sea. We glimpse the Court of Charles the Bald of West Francia and journey to the holy city of Rome.
And through it all, the two boys move ever closer to their destinies.

The Deliverer
First they chase him through the mountains for days. Then they murder his grandfather. And just as seventeen-year-old Silas Ainsley is about to escape his nameless enemies, he is killed.
This is where it should end, but Silas’ journey is far from over.
He wakes up and finds himself in a realm called Marenon; a place where humans are not the superior race, where magic is a way of life, and war is threatening to destroy it all.
Forced to make his way through the afterlife alone, Silas joins with a band of lawless mercenaries who claim they can help Silas find his murdered grandfather in exchange for his help on one of their more dangerous missions.
Along the way, Silas discovers he is part of an ancient prophecy declaring that he is the only one who can deliver Marenon from the enemies that wish to extinguish its people – the same enemies that killed Silas and his grandfather.
The Gatekeeper
Silas Ainsley is desperately searching for the Gatekeeper, but the relentless Stühocs are attacking villages, and an assassin is tracking his every move, making it impossible to find the one with all the answers about who he really is.
Meanwhile, after learning that the Dunarian Council has been compromised, Julian Hobbes scours Marenon for the truth about how deep their corruption runs, but the truth will cost innocent lives.
On the other side of Marenon, in the desert city of Voelif, Nalani leads Alric and Coffman in an attempt to steal the orange medallion of power. There they learn of a weapon that threatens to destroy them all.
The war is escalating quickly, and all of them are running out of time.
The Reckoning
Held in a dark cell in the heart of Mudavé, Silas Ainsley, the Deliverer of Marenon, meets a new enemy: the Possessor. Silas knows it won’t be long before the Stühocs try to kill him, or worse, turn him into an enemy against the very people he is meant to help.
Julian Hobbes has left the throne in Farlaweer in search of the last two medallions of power, knowing that once he has all six, he will be able to use the ultimate weapon against the Stühocs.
With three of the Dunarian council members dead, the Stühoc king, Anithistor, has charged Alric Thirsk with the task of finally destroying the Dunarians for good by killing their leader, Kaden Osric. If Alric fails, his friends will suffer a most torturous fate.
Though the Stuhocs are winning the war, Silas has a dream about a man in Mudavé who claims he can help Silas defeat Anithistor and the Possessor. That man also claims to be Silas’ father.
