I jumped on the scale today and I gotta say… I was not completely horrified. In fact I was pretty darn happy. A week and a half of not eating cake and cookies, and jogging a bit actually paid off. This is fantastic and horrible. I have been searching my whole life for the magic pill to lose weight and the secret has been diet and exercise the whole time. Well that sucks. I guess for now that is what I am going to go with, but I will certainly keep my eyes out for magic option.

Sunflowers

Genre: Literary Fiction | Family Life | Humor & Satire

There’s nothing like a knock on the door at 3:00 a.m. to change your life forever. Gus Moore discovers how true this is when his ex-girlfriend blows in on an icy January night just long enough to dump “his problem” on the couch. From indolent single slob to competent single parent, Gus’s metamorphosis over the next six years is astonishing.
All is going swimmingly for Gus and his son, Sam, until two women complicate their lives: Sarah, with whom Gus has an unsatisfactory friends-with-benefits relationship, and Maureen, his son’s bipolar mother, who has decided she wants back into her child’s life. Maureen’s illness is a subtextual presence that eventually steers the course of the novel.
Sunflowers, which takes its name from the Van Gogh studies of the same, will appeal to a wide spectrum of contemporary fiction readers. Refreshingly, Gus does not have the stereotypical Mr. Mom awkwardness of being a single parent (although he does “outsource the Jesus stuff” to the mother across the street), and there is no predictable “happy couple works it out” ending.

Is there something looking back at me? Is there something there waiting for me?

At the edge of the woods behind his father’s house, James Callum thinks he sees a monster. His father thinks he’s interested in watching the deer, but James is more interested in what’s watching him. For a twelve-year-old city boy, the intense openness of the Ohio countryside is like another world. The fields stretch forever, the summer heat is unrelenting, and the thick woods at the edge of the property hide untold secrets.

When no one believes he’s seeing a monster, his entire world unravels, leaving the frayed strands of his identity entangled with the mystery of the monster in the woods. With the help of his friends Jack and Owen, James risks his life, family, and friendships to prove the monster is real and uncover the truth behind it.

In THE WOODS, Milo Abrams pierces the veil of curiosity with an almost unbearable build-up of suspense and emotion. Don’t go outside. Don’t look into the backyard. There’s something in the woods.
