Oh joy. School starts next week and you know what that means. Summer Guilt. I feel guilty that I didn’t entertain my baby bassets enough this past summer. When I was a kid we got one vacation and we were thrilled by it. Usually it was something like Disneyland or maybe the San Diego Zoo. One great trip and the rest of the summer was up to us to entertain ourselves. I feel like that should be enough. I think it is, but I see on social media so many people posting all the great and creative adventures they are going on EVERY DAY of summer and I feel totally inadequate. We did go to Disneyland on Spring Break and we went camping a few times this summer.  ERG! The fact that we all got Covid and we had to quarantine for a few weeks didn’t help things either. Yesterday we went to mini golf. Okay… I still have time. I gotta make some incredible memories before next week. IT’S GO TIME!

2019 Donora, Pennsylvania
Ninety-one-year-old Patryk Rusek hides in his attic, hoping the searchers think he’s escaped. When Lucy finally bursts in, she discovers her beloved grandfather clutching a fat, hand-illustrated, antique book. In it is the story of Donora, the town that shaped America, its people and Patryk himself. Before long, Lucy and her son Owen lose track of their goal to get Grandpa Patryk somewhere “safe” as they’re drawn into the book, back in time, into stories that read like real-life fairytales born of purpose, hard-work, and chance.

1910 Donora, Pennsylvania
In the early dawn of Donora, Pennsylvania, the mills make and shape the steel that builds America. Mary Lancos lives in a home on the hill overlooking town and its mighty Monongahela River. That tiny house bursts with her siblings and boarders. Wind whipping through the walls and windows makes Mary determined to marry well and create a better life.

Shy Pole, Lukasz Musial, arrives in Donora seeking the clear blue skies, green lawns, and better life he’d seen pictured on a postcard. Settled in Donora’s Polish community, Lukasz secures a coveted job in the wire mill. Life is set on course to achieve the American Dream. All he needs is a wife who believes in him, in his mighty, quiet, strength.
After a series of casual, friendly meetings, fate brings Mary and Lukasz to the river under a snowy, pink moonlit sky and everything changes. Their attraction is sudden and consuming, turning the pair onto an unexpected path. With mounting disapproval from Mary’s parents she and Lukasz must decide if love is enough to risk losing everything else that matters.

An inheritance from a mother she never knew. But can this fixer-upper mend her heart?

Hazel didn’t think there was anything a homemade apple pie couldn’t fix — until her husband divorced her and left her broke. Trying her best to raise her ten-year old daughter and make ends meet, Hazel is desperate for a fresh start. When she inherits a fixer-upper in the small town of Maple Bay, Hazel and her daughter head to the country for the reading of her biological mother’s will. But a clause in the will says Hazel and her sister — the sister she didn’t know existed — must live together on the rural property for one summer, or forfeit their inheritance.

If Hazel can tough it out in the country for a few months, she stands to gain a historic carriage house. It needs renovation, but Hazel thinks she can fix it up, sell it as a bed-and-breakfast, and use the profits to begin her life anew, back in the city. She isn’t planning to stay in Maple Bay, or to fall in love with her sister’s best friend, Jesse — a single dad and handsome cowboy who is recovering from heartbreak of his own.

Hazel and Jesse are from two different worlds, but this horse-whisperer just might know how to speak to Hazel’s broken heart… until Hazel discovers a box of letters and a secret from her past that changes everything.

Starting Over in Maple Bay is a sweet, feel-good small-town romance, and the first book in a new series by award-winning author Brittney Joy.
